Knowledge Sharing: Generative AI Set to Disrupt the IT Services Provider Industry

Authors; Business Agility Day Speaker – Karlijn Deforche, Christian Bucholdt & Welin Welchev

Generative AI (GenAI) stands on the brink of fundamentally transforming the IT services landscape.

Recent studies from McKinsey [1] and BCG [2] highlight its capacity to enhance productivity, particularly in software engineering. The potential for GenAI to automate programming tasks is not merely a technological advancement. It flags a paradigm shift that the IT services sector must confront as the implications for cost structures and client demands are profound and enduring.

The maturing of GenAI signals a critical juncture for pricing models within IT services.

As AI technologies automate traditionally labor-intensive software engineering tasks, clients may rightfully expect reduced costs and streamlined pricing structures. The prospect of GenAI writing up to 40% of current code, as suggested by the GitHub CEO, further underlines the urgency for service providers to rethink their value propositions. The industry must pivot away from hourly rates to more outcome-based commercial models that reflect the measurable productivity gains facilitated by GenAI. Failure to adapt could see providers losing relevance in a rapidly evolving market where clients are increasingly empowered to weigh productivity against costs.

However, the allure of cost-saving must not obscure the complexities inherent in IT project success. Historical factors such as risk management, goal clarity, and political dynamics remain critical variables in project outcomes. Although GenAI can indeed enhance code quality and efficiency, it is crucial to recognize that technology alone does not guarantee success. Service providers must navigate the intricate realities of each client’s unique context, advocating for the holistic integration of GenAI to complement human expertise rather than replace it.

In conclusion, as GenAI becomes a driving force in software engineering, we at Xebia embrace this change with confidence and excitement. We see GenAI not as merely a tool or the newest technology but a transformative agent that is set to redefine the very nature of IT service delivery.
